Overview
Root canal therapy is a nonsurgical endodontic procedure performed to treat and save a tooth infected internally. In some instances, however, an endodontically treated tooth may have several accessory canals (small branches) in which bacteria hide and cause damage, leading to recurring or a new infection. When a tooth remains or becomes severely infected following a root canal procedure, the ideal course of care may be an apicoectomy. As an endodontic microsurgery procedure, an apicoectomy brings a lasting result to a tooth by removing the affected portion of the root tip (apex). PDA Dental's board-certified endodontist uses precision skill and technique to section the root and any surrounding infected bone tissue while keeping the remainder of the tooth and its visible restoration intact. By performing an apicoectomy, we can often save the tooth from extraction and restore health and proper function to your smile. Best Candidates
Apicoectomy procedures may be recommended for individuals who have root canal-treated teeth in which the infection has remained or returned surrounding one or more of the tooth roots. Following a root canal procedure, a tooth typically receives a dental crown or restoration to strengthen and protect the outer structure. When the presence of restoration makes retreating the tooth with a second root canal too difficult, our endodontist may recommend an apicoectomy to preserve the tooth. This type of endodontic microsurgery may also be considered for infected teeth that have dilacerated (curved or bent) roots, which may render root canal treatment very challenging and fail to deliver successful results. Our in-house endodontist utilizes the latest in advanced technology to evaluate infected and internally damaged teeth to precisely determine if performing an apicoectomy is the best treatment option for saving your tooth and oral wellness.
What to Expect
Apicoecotmies are performed by our well-trained endodontist in one of our comfortable, state-of-the-art treatment rooms. Prior to beginning your procedure, our team will numb your tooth and surrounding bone tissue and cater to your comfort throughout your entire visit. Using precision skill, our endodontic specialist will then make an incision in your gums near the affected root(s) and gain access to the tooth. The affected root tips and any damaged bone tissue will be sectioned and removed using an advanced surgical technique. After the area is thoroughly disinfected, a small filling will be placed to seal off the canal and sutures will be placed to close the incision. At the end of your visit, our team will provide you with instructions on how to take care of the area at home and when to schedule a follow-up evaluation for suture removal.
Recovery
During the first few days following a root removal procedure, you may notice bruising, numbness, or soreness in your jaw. Ice packs or cold compresses can be used to provide relief from these symptoms. A prescription for antibiotics or pain medication may be given to manage the infection and post-operative discomfort. Avoiding crunchy, chewy, or hard foods can help minimize trauma to the area and expedite healing. While your mouth should heal within a couple of weeks following your apicoectomy, the surrounding bone tissue generally takes several months to fill in and regenerate. You can help reduce your risk of future dental problems by attending routine dental cleanings and exams at PDA Dental and maintaining a good oral hygiene regimen at home each day.
Insurance Coverage
Endodontic treatment, including apicoectomies, are commonly covered in part by many dental insurance policies. To learn about your specific plan, a member of our billing staff will talk with your provider and create an estimate of your insurance coverage and any out-of-pocket costs. PDA Dental offers a variety of easy payment options, including flexible financing through CareCredit®, and can help you choose the right solution for your needs.
Apicoectomy
Teeth that are still impacted by infection after initial root canal therapy may be best treated with an apicoectomy procedure. Performed at the hands of our proficient endodontist, apicoectomies remove affected root tip(s) and damaged bone to restore oral health while saving the tooth and preserving its visible appearance.
